Abstract

Higher education institutions need co-curricular literacy spaces that not only encourage reading habits but also strengthen students' cognitive, emotional, and behavioral engagement. This study analyzes students' perceptions of the benefits of the Book Club Program at Telkom University using a descriptive qualitative approach, an exploratory case study design, and Kahu's (2013) Student Engagement Framework. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with six active students from different semesters who had attended the Book Club more than twice and represented Informatics, Electrical Engineering, Communication Science, Product Design, and MBTI backgrounds. Thematic analysis followed a hybrid deductive-inductive strategy: the three engagement dimensions served as sensitizing concepts while cross-participant themes were allowed to emerge from the data. The findings show convergence across all six participants. Cognitively, the Book Club broadened perspectives, deepened comprehension, encouraged critical reading, and enabled students to transfer ideas from readings into academic and disciplinary contexts. Emotionally, an open and non-judgmental atmosphere strengthened reading motivation, a sense of safety, empathy, and confidence. Behaviorally, the Book Club created social accountability that encouraged reading preparation, note-taking, discussion participation, further information seeking, and the application of insights after sessions. Key enabling factors were facilitation, relevant reading materials, and a supportive climate, whereas academic schedules and workload were the dominant barriers. The findings suggest that the three engagement dimensions operate as mutually reinforcing processes within a community-based literacy ecosystem managed by an academic library.
